How to Tell Your Not Hiring the Right Person.
Anyone who’s not worked in recruitment but reckons they could “give it a go” has either no idea how challenging recruitment can be or is a liar.
As a recruiter, you’ve got to keep your eye in several places at once. It’s like one of those spinning plates acts, where they’re balancing several plates at once, whilst also entertaining the crowd. In this analogy, you’re the performer, the spinning plates are the jobs you’re fulfilling, and the crowd is the rest of life.
Exactly. Still think you could “give it a go”?

Today, however, we’re focusing on the recruiters themselves and will be highlighting 7 signs that there may be trouble. Of course, this isn’t gospel, and won’t always be the case, but if we highlight these points are potential signs of trouble, it will help you in the long run.
If your candidate turns up late to your meetings, seems uninterested in the positions available, or worst still, tell you they’re not that fussed, be on high alert. These are tell-tale signs that the candidate is unlikely to succeed in the role.
As a recruiter, it’s your job to spot any signs that your candidate may not be the right person for the job. So, if they’re not enthusiastic about the position on offer, this is an indication that you should be looking elsewhere. Likewise, if they’re unenthusiastic about the role, or lackadaisical in general, this is also not good. Nobody is perfect, of course. However, if you’re starting to see more and more red flags in your potential candidate, it may be time to look for other suitable candidates.
Signs of Desperation.
This one is a clear and obvious indication that you may be running into trouble.
Desperation leads to bad decisions, and in terms of your candidate, this could lead to all manner of things. From lying about their previous experience to exaggerating their abilities, if you notice signs of desperation in a candidate, it may be better to look elsewhere.
We understand that times are tough, and people are looking for work wherever they can. But your job as a recruiter is to find the best possible candidate for the position. If you place somebody in a position because they’re desperate for work, they’re likely to be working more for the money than for the job. Which, when you’re hired to bring in the best candidate, may not go down well.
Large Gaps in Their CV.
A candidate having large gaps in their CV can be a potential sign of trouble. This can be a tricky point, however, as it may just be a case of a candidate leaving out irrelevant information, such as a gap year or personal issues.
However, a gap in a CV can be a potential indication of large periods of unemployment. This can result in a candidate not being at the peak of their working ability. It could also mean that their qualifications and certificates have expired. For example, food safety hygiene certifications or forklift qualifications should be updated every few years. If your candidate has been unemployed for some time, you’ll want to check if these are still valid before suggesting them for a position.
It may end up being nothing, but it’s an area you should definitely keep an eye on. And, as long as you’re sensible about it, you’re allowed to ask why there’s a gap in employment or education on a CV.
They’re Not Implementing Your Coaching.
Recruiters provide a service, and from time to time, you’ll be working with candidates or clients with, let’s say, questionable personality traits. One such trait you should keep an eye on is if a candidate can’t follow instructions, and that your coaching tips aren’t being taken onboard.
As the recruiter, you’ll act as the middleman in many ways, bridging the gap between the client and the candidate. This will include instructions from the client, such as how the candidate should dress. If the client chooses to ignore this or doesn’t like being told what to do, this can be a sign that the candidate won’t bode well in the position on offer.
From time to time, your job as a recruiter will require you to slightly mould the candidate into what the client is looking for. Bits of advice here and there to help them become exactly what the client is looking for. However, if the candidate is unwilling to listen to your coaching, you’ll naturally question how they will respond to instructions given to them in the job on offer.
Your Questions Aren’t Being Answered.
Part of a recruiter’s job is to ask questions to their potential candidates. After all, getting to know them as a person is just as important as understanding their wants, needs, qualifications, and experience. We’re not expecting you to know their favourite film and how they like their tea, but you have to get to know them as a person to understand how they’ll fit into the business or role. After all, it’s not unheard of for a business to take on-board someone who they believe will fit well into the team, and train them to do the job on offer.
If your candidate won’t open up, you’ll struggle to get to know them as a person, which will make your job extremely difficult. When this happens, it may be time to look at other options. After all, your candidate may meet all of the criteria in terms of qualifications and experience but if they’re a shy, reserved person and the position is within a vibrant, energetic company, it may not be a great fit.
