Work, work, work. Sometimes it feels like we do nothing but work! But it’s important to have a good work / life balance, and know your rights when it comes to working hours. Here’s what you need to know.
Legally you’re allowed to work 48 hours a week if you’re over 18 – under-18s are allowed to work a maximum of 40 hours a week. However, there are some industries where you will be required to work more than 48 hours a week, and if you choose to work longer hours you will have to confirm this in writing to your employer to opt out of the working time regulation.
It’s important to be clear about what is included in your working hours. Travelling in working hours is included, for example, but travelling to and from work if you have a fixed place of work isn’t. Ask for clarification if you’re not sure.
Don’t forget your breaks either! You’re legally required to take a 15 minute break for every 4 ½ hours worked. You’re also entitled to 5.6 weeks of annual leave each year as a minimum, including bank holidays.
